The lines outside grew as one person from each group of residents lined up. It was food ration day, which I dreaded each week because of the decreasing amount of food that had been coming back with each scavenging mission. The more survivors who arrived, the less food we seemed able to find. Now, we were heavily relying on the town gardens, which had been mostly taken over by twins who had more of a nature ability. Unlike Mateo’s power that was more destructive and sent pieces of the earth flying everywhere, their powers were more of growth. They could speed up the time it took to normally grow vegetables, which was pretty astonishing when a seed turned into a full-grown tomato plant that was ready to harvest right before my eyes. If it wasn’t for their garden powers, I fully believed this town would be spiraling due to the lack of food. Now we were mostly using the scavenger findings to supplement the vegetables, while also trying to find some seeds to start growing fruits and other things.

I looked around at the food that was all piled up on the table, and then more in the wagons that were about ready to be rolled out. These would be sufficient for this week, and some of the things could be kept in here for next week. But how long until we began to run low enough that people would begin to revolt? They could only survive so long on lettuce and tomatoes. We would have run into this issue already if it hadn’t been for the garden and the nature growing powers, plus people hunting the overly abundant wildlife when possible, but we were still too limited on sustenance. We had more people than ever before out searching, picking any vegetation that could be eaten, and even more people taking care of the garden Jonah had helped build before, which had now grown with all the new fruits and vegetables being added to it. The problem, though, was the garden couldn’t produce enough to fully sustain everyone here. It added to things and lightened the load a bit, but we still needed more. We needed variety.

Even those who had taken up hunting were coming back mostly with rabbits and fish in an attempt to help feed the hundreds of survivors. We got the occasional deer, but the bottom line was this place was just growing way too fast. Food producing powers or not, and I was pretty sure that we were nearing the tipping point.

“They’re getting restless.” Cerise peeked through the blinds at the lines.

Shouts of anger and impatience carried into this little building from outside. Lincoln and Mateo were out there providing crowd control along with some other volunteers.

“It’s only a matter of time before people completely lose their humanity.” Jonathon added another package of mixed nuts to a wagon. “Realistically, we can only contain things here for so long. If more people don’t get a hang of their
